Pokémon Go
Keep kids & dogs SAFE
Pokémon Go has become a global phenomenon in less time than it takes to get your kids to soccer practice. In two weeks, it has been installed on nearly 6% of all US based Android smart devices and has surpassed the usage of Netflix and Twitter, according to Fortune.
There are actually memes devoted to players’ sore legs from accidentally getting too much exercise while playing. (Are you laughing here? I’m laughing here and you should be too.)
As parents, we love the thought of a game that gets our kids up off their butts and has them exploring the neighborhood, nature, and the community at large. But there’s another member of your family that would love to spend time outdoors too. Your dog! In the game, you have to incubate your eggs by walking. We all know your dog would love to go on more walks.
But before your kids run out of the house with your dog in tow, it’s important to discuss safety while playing Pokémon Go. For all the positive attributes of this game, there are negatives. Players have broken bones, walked into traffic, wrecked their cars, and been robbed. So it’s important to have a conversation with your kids about how to stay SAFE, while playing Pokémon Go by themselves or with the family dog.

Being SAFE While Playing Pokémon Go
Increase your knowledge and avoid accidents
As adults, the more we can teach our children about how to stay SAFE when they’re playing and in the company of dogs, the better. Dogs can be great companions for our kids. With some gentle reminders from Mom and Dad, in addition to using the Be Poké SAFE program, kids and dogs can both enjoy being outdoors and playing Pokémon Go.
Remember these Top 3 things to keep SAFE when playing Pokémon Go:
- Always have your dog on a leash when walking with you. Using a front clipping harness with a leash, will give you the most control over your dog.
- Pay attention to where you’re going and what your dog is doing.
- When you find a Pokémon, have your dog sit at your side before you throw a Poke ball. Use dog treats to help get your dog in a sit.

Take a Stand Against Dog & Kid Safety
Education for adults and children is key
Regardless of how long you’ve had your family dog or how well you think you know him, any dog can bite or be incented to run and chase. Dog bites and bad dog behavior results in many dogs being surrendered to animal shelters. According to the ASPCA, approximately 1.2 million dogs are euthanized each year.
Help stop the growing number of dog bites and the number of dogs being left at shelters. Educate yourself and your children about proper behavior around dogs, how to greet a dog, and how to respect dogs. A little understanding goes a long way to building a better relationship between your dog and all your family members.
