What does it mean to be a responsible pet owner?
Our pets rely on us to take care of them and keep them safe. They can’t talk, so it’s our job to be a responsible pet owner and give them what they need to be happy and healthy. Let’s go through all the things your pet needs.
You pet needs food every day. But not just any food. They need nutritious food especially made for the breed of animal they are. Dogs need dog food. Cats need cat food. Fish need fish food.
While there are some human foods that are good for animals, (sweet potatoes for dogs is a great snack) there are many foods that are poisonous. Here’s a list of foods you should never give your dog or cat:
- chocolate
- coffee
- caffeine
- alcohol
- xylitol (found in sugar free gum or candy)
- avocado
- macadamia nuts
- grapes
- raisins
- onions

Also make sure you’re feeding your pet the right amount of food. Puppies get fed 3 to 4 times a day and adult dogs 1 to 2 times a day. If you’re not sure how much to feed your pet or what to feed your pet, ask your veterinarian.
Your pet also needs fresh, clean water every day. No one likes to be thirsty, especially when it’s hot.
Having a pet is a big responsibility. Our pets rely on us to take care of them and keep them safe. “How to Be a Responsible Pet Owner” shows how to love and respect your pet. Teach your kids what it really means to be a pet owner.
